"So You Want to Become a Surgeon..."
"Surgery" literally means to work with one's hands; thus in the medical sense it implies the treatment of disease using the hands. With the exceptions of the skin and mucous membranes, the internal organs can only be accessed by opening up the body - therefore surgery became synonymous with cutting or opening up a part of the body.

"So You Want to Become a Nurse..."
Nursing can be defined as the general care of sick people, as opposed to the medical treatment of their diseases. A professional nurse is able to skillfully combine the art of caring with the science of healthcare. Nursing places its focus on the patient as a whole, rather than on a particular disease or health issue.

"So You Want to Become a Dentist..."
"Dentistry" literally means "the study field concerned with teeth". This is a somewhat deficient definition, as dentistry is both the science and art dealing with the teeth, the jaw bones and all the soft tissues associated with these structures - including the gums, the lining of the mouth, the tongue, the jaw muscles and joints, the nerves in the head and neck region, and other related structures such as the salivary glands.
