Hi there I am currently studying a-levels in UK but resitting after a poor first attempt at biol + chem. I was wondering if you had any advice for getting motivated and not procrastinating with revision as this is what I am doing.

Tom

05.Jan.2009 01:38pm

1. Visualize your destination in life(e.g. see yourself as a qualified Doctor)
2. Write out a written plan and study schedule
3. Have a responsible friend or adult to be accountable to - who will make sure that you keep to your plan.
No other short-cuts to discipline that I know off!

i want to study in harverd university. i'm in 10th. how can i prepare mytself to get admission over there?

Sush

03.Jan.2009 01:52pm

You will have to study very hard and make sure that you get super Grade 12 results and even better results for your pre-med degree, as well as evidence of community service, hospital volunteer services and research projects.
You are aiming high - go for it!

Dr Anton

I live in the UK and have a place to do Medicine at university. After this I would quite like to have a career in the USA, how is this done? What are the steps, and when does the preparation need to start?

Ani

03.Jan.2009 10:45am

Dear Ani
The pre-graduate curriculum of the UK medical schools and the U.S.A. medical schools differ substantially, so unless you are studying at a UK medical school with a formal reciprocity agreement with a USA medical school, you may be "wasting" a lot of years. Consider going the USA route from the start - see article on becoming a doctor in the U.S.A.

i want to become a dctor. i'm in my 10th now. whats the average mark i need to become a doctor? what degrees have to done?

Sush

29.Dec.2008 03:04pm

Hi Sush

1. Get a GED or a high school diploma. Good marks in maths, life sciences/biology, physical science and chemistry would be great.
2. Then you MUST finish a 4-year college or university, complying with medical school premed requirements
3. In your final year at college/university, you will have to do the MCAT test (Medical School Admission test)
4. Apply for a place at a medical school. I would suggest that you make use of 'AMCAS'.
5. Complete medical school: Usually four years. Two years of medical school include the study of anatomy, physiology and biology. Students in their third and fourth years perform supervised work with patients in clinics and hospitals.
6. Complete a residency training program. After graduating from medical school, potential doctors must spend three or more years in residency, where they care for patients under the supervision of attending physicians and senior residents. The number of years spent doing this depends on the chosen specialty.
7. Obtain a medical license: All states require doctors to have a medical license in order to practice medicine.

Dr Anton

I am currently a pre-med student. I want to prepare myself for medical school as much as I can. Do you have any recommendations on books, websites, or journals for me to read? Or anything that would help me out. Thank You

29.Dec.2008 03:03pm

Such a lot depends on the MCAT - so I would really focus most of my attention on this and the best possible results for the premed degree.

Huda

28.Dec.2008 10:51am

It will be okay!
Characteristics like "Thorough preparation", "perseverance" and "persistence" are very important.
Your resume/transcript should be written to highlight the above character traits.

Yes there are masses of memorizing to do, but somehow one does cope. Practical application e.g. learning anatomy by doing cadaver dissections makes the memorizing a lot easier!

Im a 18yr old Comm. College student.I am smart in sci+math if i apply myself but Im scared that I'll not be good enough.Plus it seems that i might need to take an extra semester or two.Is that bad for UCLA to see on transcript?

Huda

27.Dec.2008 08:44am

Dear Huda
No - not at all - do the extra semester or two if required!

Medical schools mainly select students on the basis of the 4 year degree before applying for a place in a medical school. (MCAT scores)
Other factors like GPA, letters of recommendation, research, community service and volunteer services at a hospital etc. are quite important!

Hi Dr Anton

im currently in 9th grade and im not doing to great in math i want to be a trauma surgeon when im done with school. how long will it take me and will math affect my future dream?

tiya

27.Dec.2008 08:29am

Hi Tiya

Have a look at: BECOME A DOCTOR IN THE USA

Maths is important because medical schools require that you do courses in:

"Freshman" chemistry along with the appropriate laboratory courses
Organic chemistry along with laboratory courses
Biology along with laboratory courses
Physics along with laboratory courses
English
Calculus including advanced math classes and statistics

Entrance degree before med school: 4years
Medical degree: 4 years
Residency in surgery: 4-6 years.
Looks like at least 12 years!

Dr Anton

14.Dec.2008 05:23pm

what do you have to do to become a doctor in trama

Aaron

27.Dec.2008 08:19am

You have to start off with a 4 year premed degree, and you may choose to major in a variety of subjects like biochemistry, physics, organic chemistry or even economics for instance. Then you do 4 years of medical school, and following success in medical school you do 3-4 years internship in ER/trauma medicine. You can pick and choose a university to do your premed degree, and you will also have a choice of over a hundred medical schools in the U.S.A. Does it make sense?

Dr Anton

13.Dec.2008 03:37pm

Dear Dr Anton,
Thank you for your respond to my previous question. Now I have another question. What are the requirements to enter the pre-med school of UCLA? What units should I take at College?

Hi Melanie

tayl

27.Dec.2008 07:58am

Well Tayl
Life is a bit "stingy" regarding dishing out success - and no real short-cuts exist!
Work hard - put in the hours, and work smart - be sure that you study effectively - I would advise you to take a good study-methods course. Maybe I will expand on this subject in one of 2009's newsletters.

Dr Anton

13.Dec.2008 02:31am

I have been to college 3 times, and I have yet to be able to survive in a class room. I learn differently then most, I need to "DO" before I can learn it out of a book. I know I can be a good Doc, What should I do.

Rob

I am a 40 year old IT Manager and have an interest in pursuing Medicine. Is that even possible for me at this point in my life?

FJD

13.Dec.2008 06:30am

It really takes the best part of 11 years before you will be able to practice medicine outside of an academic setup.
Medical schools do give preference to younger applicants as a general rule.
So I would say "no, I don't think so".

Dr Anton

12.Dec.2008 01:48pm

Dear Dr Anton,
What is the difference between Pre-med schools and universities like UCLA ? I want to become a family doctor. I'm at college. What should my next step be?

Melanie

13.Dec.2008 06:32am

Most universities offer a dedicated 4 years premed degree. Universities like UCLA do have a medical school offering training in the spectrum of medical careers. If you would like to become a doctor, you need to do a premed degree first.

what does my high school average mark have to be to become a doctor? I think its 90+ (I'm in grade 8 right now)

Andy

28.Nov.2008 01:26pm

Andy
In the USA - your entrance selection to medical college is based on your premed degree and not on your high school results. Fairly obviously you have to get good marks to enter a premed program.
In the UK and many other countries one needs to get 90% or higher to enter a medical school based on your high school results. So it really depends on where you are living and whrere you intend studying medicine.

Dr Anton

26.Nov.2008 06:59pm

No short-cuts, if you want to increase your GPA you need to work harder and smarter.
See my answer below to Arpa's question, as it is equally relevant to you...

Dr Anton

26.Nov.2008 03:27am

Hi Dr Anton,

I'm in grade 9 and on my midterms I got a 88% in math. I don't have science this semester but I think I got a 80-90% last year in grade 8. I was wondering if these marks are good enough.

Thanks,

Arpa

26.Nov.2008 12:37pm

Arpa
Well done - great marks!
Keep in mind that in the USA your high school results only need to get you into an accredited pre-med degree course. The real competitive part of entering medical school is based on your pre-med degree results. In other countries you may be selected on the basis of your Gr 12 or equivalent results.

Dear Lupy
Yes. There is much much more to making an accurate diagnosis of skin lesions apart from the color - like the symtoms, medical history, the texture of the lesion, information gathered on palpation, microscopic appearance and other special investigations etc. Keep in mind that most color-blind people can actually see colors - but two colors like green and red for instance appears the same. In other words they don't see in black and white...

Hello doctor,
I am currently in grade 12 and I'm not very strong in math. I get around 77 on an average. But I'm really good at science. Will this be a problem for me later?

lalala15

04.Nov.2008 11:50am

Dear Lalala
Many students will envy you for your 77 - but adding another 3% would be great. Personally I don't think that you will have a problem - science is very important.
All of the best with your further studies!

Hi Iona
It seems like you will have to make the final commitment to become a doctor. Once you have done that, everything else will start falling in place.
Have a look at these Letters from the doc:
"So You Want to Be a General Practitioner (Medical Doctor)..."
and
"How to Become a Doctor in the United States of America..."

I will be doing my o-levels this may and i am aiming to become a doctor.May be I will specialise in dermatology.Do you think that I must take ICT or computer studies?

21.Oct.2008 08:18pm

Lupy
The basic principle is taking as many science/maths related subjects as possible. Dermatology is interesting, with essentially no after hours emergencies

riky73

It varies from state to state - you will have to contact the medical board in the state that you intend practicing in to get the details on requirements and procedures that you will have to follow.

Hi dr anton
Im currently a nursing student at diploma level in the UK. But would like to study medcine. Any tips or advice that could help fulfil this

esha

19.Oct.2008 08:26pm

Dear Esha
I am sure your nursing qualification will count in your favour when applying for a place in medical school, but unfortunately no shortcuts - you will have to go through the normal selection/application procedures - and remember that school subjects like mathematics and science will be essential!

I am doing health and social care and biology i would like to specialise in womens health or be a doctor but i want to go to uni what should i do?

My advice is - first become a doctor. As a doctor you have a number of possibilities to get involved in woman's health.
Have a look as these articles under "Letters from the doc":
How to be become a doctor in the U.S.A. and
So you want to become a general practitioner.
Trust this helps!

How can I be better at maths to become a doctor?

Renee

07.Oct.2008 03:15pm

Renee
Practice, practice and practice and have faith in your abilities ("I can" attitude).
Extra lessons may also be helpful, because if you struggle with maths, you may have missed out (or may not have comprehended) a basic mathematical concept - and this needs to be rectified!

Hi Dr Anton,
how do you become an er doctor ilive in Pennsylvania is an MD the same as an er doctor and can you be a family doctor and an er doctor

Thanks

dan

04.Oct.2008 02:38am

To become an ER physician, you need to qualify as a medical doctor first, and then follow a dedicated 3 year residency program. Family medicine has become somewhat of a specialty on its own - so it would be difficult to be both.

Hi Dr. Anton,

I Currently work as a consultant for psychological assessments in a hospital. I want to become a Dr. but havn't done Science papers when i was at school. What do you suggest i do to become a doctor?

tay83

22.Sep.2008 01:59pm

I presume you still have to do a premed science degree. Most universities do offer a bridging course for students in your position. A lot depends on your present qualifications etc. You may find all the answers you are looking for on www.valuemd.com - a forum for premed students that may (or may have been) in a similar position to yourself.

Are online colleges good for starting off my career in becomin a good doctor

kim

15.Sep.2008 02:31pm

Kim
If you would like to add a high school science credit or two to your resume, follow the link on our Site alert - Home page.
I am not aware of any accredited Premed science degrees offered online. I suggest you contact your local college or university and ask them what the best next step would be for you to become a doctor. They will tell you exactly what steps apply in your country or state.

14.Sep.2008 04:22pm

what can i do to start my career off in becoming a doctor because i just graduated high school and i need some good help??? i have nobody helpin me i really need help please

kim

15.Sep.2008 02:27pm

Kim
Consider the following:
Do some volunteer work at a local hospital
Go on a MASH camp - contact the local AHEC (Area Health Education Centre)
Do some medical things - do an accredited first aid course, or get your own Apprentice Doctor Foundation or suturing kit and complete the course material.
Above all - prepare yourself for an accredited premed degree!
