Alexis
You are asking a difficult question. If you stand academically strong I would recommend that you go for Physics - but your overall average is also quite important - your final decision...

What is it call when i want to be a doctor that work on the body?

Alex

26.Feb.2009 12:02pm

Hi Alex
Most doctors work on the body - surgeons do surgery on the body and physicians treat diseases with non-surgical modalities.

Dr Anton

25.Feb.2009 07:40pm

Hi i was wondering what do basically do when you are an interin

la

26.Feb.2009 11:59am

An Intern does a lot of routine work - like admitting patients, preparing patients for surgical procedures, preparing patients for anesthesia, endless lists of special investigations like taking bloods, arrange X-rays, assisting other medical professionals etc...

Dr Anton

24.Feb.2009 08:49pm

Is it neccessary to take law to become a doctor? And what math do you need besides Adv. Functions and Calculus?

Bob

25.Feb.2009 01:00pm

Hi Bob
No - but you will do something like a course in medical ethics or something equivalent. Have a look at the MCAT website for the answer to the second part of your question... http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/

How Do Doctors Learn And Remember All Of These Facta

Tom

24.Feb.2009 03:27pm

Hi Tom
Good question.
Medical students study the theory, and apply it straight away. You learn anatomy in the handbook and do cadaver dissections later in the day - believe me - it does stick that way. Students learn medicine in the morning and apply the theory in the clinical wards later in the day. The Apprentice Doctor Kits have been designed the same way - learn the facts and then apply it straight away...

23.Feb.2009 08:08pm

should i take physics, life skills, or human anatomy and physiology in my senior year?

T

24.Feb.2009 12:09pm

T
I wound go for Physics and life skills.
You will have ample of time studying human anatomy and physiology in medical school - in great great detail!

Dr Anton

23.Feb.2009 07:20pm

How about law, it seems fun but I don't know does it have anything to do with being a doctor. Also, what are the doctors in the ER at the hospital called?

Bob

24.Feb.2009 12:07pm

There are a number of attorneys specializing in medical matters - and a lot of attorneys making a living out of suing doctors!
Casualty officer, trauma doctor etc.

Dr Anton

23.Feb.2009 04:19pm

i live in the uk and i want to be a medical doctor but i also love to run so wat used i take for my subjects and is business studies necessary. and does PE help to become a doctor. what about french, history and geography

moi

24.Feb.2009 12:04pm

The general rule is - take as many science subjects as possible, plus maths.
Maybe consider becoming a doctor specializing in sports medicine.

Dr Anton

23.Feb.2009 02:46pm

When u apply 2 unis 4 medicine, what enables you to stand out from the crowd. Everyone plays an instrument, does work experience, is extremely smart. However, can you give me ideas as to that special 'thing' admission tutors look 4

I really want to become a doctor, but i'm not sure that i will get good enough grades in college is it possible to go through a nursing degree first?

Claire

23.Feb.2009 03:02pm

Hi Claire
It is possible to become a medical student after becoming a licensed nurse. You will need another year of general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and biology, all with lab, prior to taking the MCAT. Review courses are optional, depending on your specific needs. Then add another 4 years in medical school and 3 years of internship/residency.

Dr Anton

22.Feb.2009 10:04pm

hi
i?m doing a french scientific high school. My teachers tell me that medicine in france is very hard! is it true? i?m in last year and i want to become a cardiothorasic surgeon. how many years would it take me?

pitti

23.Feb.2009 02:15am

Pitti
Let me assure you that studying medicine in ANY country is very hard! There is an element of professional pride - like European schools are better than North American schools and vise versa - but in the final analysis both areas train doctors of exceptionally high standards!
Cardiothoracic (spelling) surgeon- in the USA the best part of 14 years... (including residency)

Dr Anton

22.Feb.2009 04:41pm

hi doctor
i want to become a doctor and my question is that do we have to take biology in 11 and 12 or either we just need one credit of biology.

fatima

23.Feb.2009 02:11am

Fatima
You don't have to - but Biology does make a good foundation for studying medicine...
Maybe consider a dedicated pre-med online course - it does look good on a resume!

22.Feb.2009 04:03am

Hi doc,
I'm just wondering what branch in science do you have to study to become a doctor?

Thanks.

Nic

22.Feb.2009 02:37pm

Chemistry - especially organic chemistry and biochemistry.
Also various aspects of physical science, optics, nuclear physics, etc.
Life sciences... to mention but a few.

Dr Anton

21.Feb.2009 09:24pm

I live in Canada, I was wondering do you need any computers to become a doctor? Like ICS, Accounting or Marketing?

Bob

22.Feb.2009 02:40pm

Hi Bob
ICS, Marketing and Accounting are all nice to haves - but not essential for becoming a doctor. If you are aiming at opening your own practice, then business subjects are very valuable!

Dr Anton

21.Feb.2009 06:35pm

Hi,I am in grade 2 and i would like to become a doctor.
How much do you make?

HUBBA HUBBA

22.Feb.2009 02:44pm

Hi Hubba Hubba
Your question is valid - but I am somewhat worried about your motive for becoming a doctor. Click Here
A general practitioner doctor makes between $150 000 and $350 000 per year.

Dr Anton

20.Feb.2009 06:27pm

19.Feb.2009 11:35pm

I want to become a general surgeon, right now I am in grade 10.
Which sciences and maths do I need, also do I need french?

Sydnie

20.Feb.2009 01:42am

Hi Sydnie
As a general rule I will recommend as many science and maths subjects as possible. But at the same time keep the balance with languages and social/art subjects. Well French will be a nice to have - unless you live in Canada Quebec then I suppose it is essential!

Dr Anton

19.Feb.2009 07:52pm

HELLO DR. I AM CURRENTLY IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND ABOUT TO GRADUATE NEXT SEMESTER TO A 4YRS UNIVERSITY. I WOULD LIKE TO SPECIALIZE IN SOMETHING. BUT IN THE OPTOMETRY FIELD. WHAT ADVISE CAN YOU GIVE ME? THANK YOU..

LIGHT AMEDZEKOR

20.Feb.2009 01:36am

Hi
Keep in mind that there are a number of science prerequisites when completing your B degree. Optometry is a wonderful field, and offers a number of specialty fields like pediatric optometry, geriatric optometry etc.
All of the best!

Dr Anton

19.Feb.2009 06:46pm

I also need help choosing the classes i need to take during senior year, i can choose 2 of these choices: human anatomy, Chemistry AP, Biology AP, and honors Physics; which ones will help me become a doctor?

Luis

20.Feb.2009 01:31am

Luis
All of these subjects would help you to become a doctor. Choose broader science subjects at this stage. Keep in mind that you will study anatomy in great detail in medical school - so it really is not essential now. To keep your interest going consider an online high school premed course: Click Here

Dr Anton

19.Feb.2009 06:43pm

Im very interested in becoming a doctor in anything, but people tell me i would become a "slave" to work, that i would not have enough time to have a social life. Is any of this true?

Luis

20.Feb.2009 01:26am

Hi Luis
Reaching any worthwhile goal in life takes utter dedication - be it medicine, any other profession or business. Life does not reward half-hearted efforts.
The secret is in time management - as a medical professional you will have to manage your time very carefully - time for God, time for family etc... or whatever you value as important in your life.

19.Feb.2009 07:42am

Hi Dr Anton. I am a 15 year old boy in the UK and i have recently decided that i want to become a doctor in the ER, but i have already chosen my subjects and i did not take biology and i am not very good at physics. What do i do?

Michael

19.Feb.2009 09:31am

To become a doctor in the UK you really need those subjects - talk to your career guidance teacher.

Dr Anton

19.Feb.2009 03:36am

do i do biology

n

19.Feb.2009 09:30am

Yes - if at all possible. Biology
(the study of life) forms the foundation of the study of viruses, bacteria fungi, plant and animal life - and thus of course the study of microbiology, human physiology and anatomy etc.
Although not essential it is highly recommended!

Dr Anton

18.Feb.2009 07:35pm

T

18.Feb.2009 04:25pm

hi,im good in science,ok in math,an im taking biology next year. what kinds of science an math lill help me or give me a head start?

Amber

19.Feb.2009 09:25am

Well - it all depends on what you school is offering...
I would recommend that you do an online premed course which is accredited and adds high school science credits. See:

Dr Anton

18.Feb.2009 04:02pm

what if you want to specialize in something? lill that be another extra two years?

Amber

19.Feb.2009 09:22am

In the USA you can direct your career during your residency towards a specific specialty e.g. surgery. Depending on the field of specialization you will have to add 1 - 7 years of residency time to the initial 3 years.

Dr Anton

18.Feb.2009 03:53pm

hi doc , would u think llumc is a good school to become a doctor

Dr. Kenneth Wilson

19.Feb.2009 09:12am

Hi Dr Kenneth
Although LLUMC is not amongst the official top 25 medical schools, I do believe that it is a good school - but that is simply my opinion.

Dr Anton

18.Feb.2009 02:30pm

Taylor
I would say go straight to medical school...

Dr Anton

17.Feb.2009 10:22pm

hi,I'm not doin that great in school,i'm in the 8th grade goin on 14. what classes should i take to become a doctor? An how many years of college, medical school,an ect. to become just a regular doctor, not specializing in anything?

Amber

18.Feb.2009 02:22pm

Hi Amber
Biology, maths and science.
Four years premed, 4 years medical school and 3 years of internship/residency - thus 11 years.

Dr Anton

17.Feb.2009 01:19pm

does it really takes 11years to become a doctor

kim

18.Feb.2009 02:19pm

Kim
In the USA it takes 8 years to become a doctor.
(Some universities combines the pre-med and medical school and thereby cut off a year or two) BUT before you can open a practice, you need medical board registration - and thus another 3 years of residency following the 8 years (4 years premed and 4 years medical school)

Dr Anton

17.Feb.2009 11:26am

Hi doc
i am good in math, best in physics, biology but very poor in chemistry im looking forward 2 become a doctor but can i be a computer engineer?

Damey

18.Feb.2009 02:13pm

Damey
You can become a doctor - just shape up your chemistry!! Would you really like to become a computer engineer? Of course you can... but rather go fir medicine!

Dr Anton

15.Feb.2009 11:30am

May I suggest that you become an ER doctor - and then after that you study to become a forensic pathologist...

Dr Anton

14.Feb.2009 06:05pm

I hate chemistry, is there a way I can survive college chemistry or not do it? Its extremely difficult for me.

Kei

16.Feb.2009 12:06am

Hi Kei
The short answer is: Chemistry is absolutely essential to become a doctor!
Consider extra classes - whatever it takes! (Or choose an another career)

Dr Anton

13.Feb.2009 09:00pm

is there any prescription papers that can be printed out

abdel

16.Feb.2009 12:03am

Abdel
Not to my knowledge - but it can be easily designed on suitable software. Strict legalities are applicable when it comes to issuing a prescription - medical board registration numbers etc. is required...

Dr Anton

13.Feb.2009 04:14pm

Hi Dr Anton.
I know that I need to do volunteer work in order to get into a medical school. How much volunteer work is needed to enter a medical school in California?
Thanks

Melanie

15.Feb.2009 11:58pm

Volunteer work is highly recommended - but the specifics are really up to you. Medical schools are not prescriptive in this regard - but it does look great on your CV/resume.

(Varies somewhat from country to country though...)

Dr Anton

10.Feb.2009 11:38am

I am studying medicine in Ireland at the moment but would eventually like to work in America. Is the Irish medical degree recognized over there or would I have to do and extra exam? If so what is it like?

Twink

10.Feb.2009 11:47am

1. Make a decision on the state where you would like to practice medicine in.
2. Contact the specific state's Medical Board and ask for guidelines.
The question is also whether your university's medical school / medical educational authorities have a reciprocity arrangement with any USA medical school?

Hi Doctor Anton
I just came to the UK from Nigeria and I have an O level GCE ( mainly B's & C's)result which is equivalent to the GCSE here in the Uk but people keep telling me that mecidine is too difficult.I don't know what to do.

gbemy

10.Feb.2009 11:32am

Hi Gbemy
To become a doctor is very competitive - and medical schools "harvest" the A and A+ students. This leaves you with 2 options:
get better marks or
choose another career
There are many other alternative medical/healthcare careers besides medical doctor.

Dr Anton

09.Feb.2009 12:06pm

im in the army and want to start my career as a doctor what do i need to major in college to succeed and what online college would be best.

adam

09.Feb.2009 12:30pm

Hi Adam
Very few medical schools are prescriptive regarding your major - just as long as you cover the prerequisites to do the MCAT Exam. So you can choose Philosophy, Economics, Chemistry or Biology for instance. See: Click Here
I am unsure if one can do some of the premed degree online... is there someone who might have some more detail?
