I really want to become a doctor. I got accepted in premed. In 2009 i will start. all the subjects the biology and physics and other are fun courses but I am afraid of organic chemistry. does it need a strong backround or basics.
Mohammad
09.Feb.2009 12:21pm
Mohammed - you will have to realize that the human body is a highly complex organic chemistry processing unit - and to do become a doctor, you need to have a high level of insight into these processes. So you do need a detailed/strong organic chemistry background.
All of the best with your premed degree!

If so, are the questions hard?
I dislike math and physics and I'm plannin on droppin these courses in uni.

Yes, indeed - if you are well prepared the questions are usually quote moderate in difficulty level.
You will have to do some maths and physics - see:Click Here ...or see the MCAT website.

Hi Chant
Go for excellence in your schooling career, get as much information about selection criteria to the medical school you would like to apply to for selection - and do some volunteer work at a local hospital, and add a number of other medical courses - like a first aid course and one or two of the Apprentice Doctor courses...
Have a look at this article: Click Here
Go for it - all of the best!

07.Feb.2009 08:33am
Hi Nabila
You are certainly laying the right foundation for becoming a doctor! Keep in mind though that selection to medical school is based primarily on 3 items
1. Your "premed" degree
2. Your MCAT results
3. That something extra (to distinguish you from other applicants) - see:
Get the finer details of selection criteria from the relevant medical school that you would like to attend (their website or administrative section).

Hi Doctor Anton,
I was wondering if there are any medical dramas/comedys you like or can relate to or if any are at all like what hospital life is really like? Is it anything like Scrubs for example.
Kind Regards,
Tom
Tom
07.Feb.2009 08:26am
Tom - to be honest, I get preciously little time to watch TV. Between my practice and The Apprentice Corporation, I try to keep enough time for my family and reading good books etc. ER gets somewhat close to reality - but in the final analysis there is nothing like the real thing. Real life makes for the most interesting and intriguing dramas.
Remember this quotable quote: "Life is what happens while other people are watching TV!" I'm afraid this quote has prooved to be true (to a great extent) in my experience.

Hello Dr. Anton,
How can you shadow a doctor? From my experience doctors are very busy. :( thanks.
Alex
06.Feb.2009 01:16pm
Alex
To shadow a doctor is somewhat complicated. The doctor-patient relationship is built on a foundation of absolute confidentiality - and most doctors and almost all patients would not allow a "shadow" to compromise this confidentiality situation.
Most hospitals do have a week or so where prospective medical professionals can get an idea of what medicine is all about - and it really isn't much like Grey's anatomy which is highly dramatized.
Get more information about a hospital rotation from your local AHEC centre.

i'm a medical undergraduate student.how to become a surgeon?
audrey
05.Feb.2009 11:43am
Hi Audrey
The answer may vary depending on the country/state that you live in. The following would be more or less the route to follow:
Do your internship year, followed a surgical residency program. Surgical residency is where you are exposed to real surgery and where you will be learning how to perform surgical procedures. This may take from 2-8 years depending on the specific surgical discipline that you want to pursue. ER docs and Neurosurgeons have, respectively, the shortest and longest residencies.

Hi Sadia
How about Business studies (one day you will probably want to go into private practice), also consider Psychology, Communication studies, Statistics (if you are interested in research) and of course a language - depending on what subjects are offered... and consider something art-wise (fine arts, art and design, or photography)

I would like to become a clinical psychologist how many years to finish, and what advice can you give me
Peggy
02.Feb.2009 11:50am
Hi Peggy
Depending on the country or state that you live in the answer may vary to some extent - but in general you are looking at a bachelor's degree of 4 years and a graduate/doctors degree of 5 years - thus 9 years before you will be able to get a license to practice as a clinical psychologist. Aim for a specific field of interest at an early stage - like child psychology or trauma psychology etc.
All of the best!

shanice
31.Jan.2009 11:25am
Shanice
It is possible for you to become a medical student after becoming a licensed nurse. You will need 1 year of general chemistry, 1 year of organic chemistry, 1 year of physics, and 1 year of biology, all with lab, prior to taking the MCAT. Review courses are optional, depending on your specific needs. Then add another 4 years in medical school and 3 years of internship/residency.

Hi Adam
Consider a major in a science subject like Physics.
After qualifying in med school you will have to do an internship in a hospital for at least 5-6 years before qualifying as cardio-thoracic surgeon. Following your internship, you will be able to start your own business (private practice).

25.Jan.2009 12:24pm
Hi Suji
The competition for selection to universities and colleges in the medical field is fierce - so you have to build up an impressive track record!
So A is good - but A* of course is better and the same with science - so go for triple science if at all possible.
Due to the vast numbers of apprentice doctors I simply (and regretfully) cannot reply to private e-mail addresses.

What helps you focus in a stressful/ dangerous surgery? Do you do the surgery twice (I mean both mentally and physically)? What was your first surgery and how did you feel about?
Alex
21.Jan.2009 12:58pm
Alex
You have to acquire the ability to switch off all negative emotions.
Yes - it is important to perform complicated surgery twice - the night before the surgery - it occurs in detail in your mind.
I think removing a small mole - an important first step - thus I felt quite good about myself!

1. Visualize your destination in life(e.g. see yourself as a qualified Doctor)
2. Write out a written plan and study schedule
3. Have a responsible friend or adult to be accountable to - who will make sure that you keep to your plan.
No other short-cuts to discipline that I know off!
