Doctor,
I emailed the addresses you gave to me for medical camps, but no one has responded. It has been about four days. Also, how important is the undergraduate school that one attends in regards of getting accepted into medical school? I have been visiting schools such as Marist College, Mount Saint Mary, Mount Saint Vincent, Cornell University, Ithaca College, Brown University. Does Ivy-League matter? Sorry if this may be a little off topic Doctor.

Thanks

Shelly

Shelly
Well not a great testimony to the AHECs of NY!
Have you considered volunteering to one of the hospitals close to you?
I will be giving a 3 hour hands-on lecture on suturing in Tampa FL on Aug 21 2009 - if you can get there you are welcome to attend!
I do envisage having an Apprentice Doctor Medical camp for a week in 2010 - somewhere in the USA.
When a member of the public goes to a doctor they rarely if ever would enquire where you have studied - as long as you are qualified and board certified. Of course qualifying at a one of the top 20 medical schools would be a great bonus!

Hi Doc,

Im a 17 year old girl from Montreal, Canada starting college in fall. What steps would I have to take in order to study medicine in USA?

Thanks !!

Olivia

28.Jul.2009 05:12pm

Olivia
If you envisage becoming a doctor in the USA - as well as living and practicing there, I would suggest that you do you B degree (including the premed requirements) at a USA university.
I suppose you know the detail but here it is:

Dear doctor:
thank you for replying and from tomorrow I will select Mechanics. And doctor is Russian MBBS is recognized by other countries?? And what do u think of going to Russia for medicine?? and are there any difficulties when Russian doctors find a job????thank you.

supun

27.Jul.2009 01:24pm

Supun
Recognition may vary from country to country, and from medical school to medical school. There are quite a number of reputable Russian medical schools - I personally worked with a number of Russian doctors - and have a lot of respect for these Russian qualified doctors.
As a general statement it is always easier and better to study in the country where you would like to practice one day.

Bean

26.Jul.2009 12:58pm

Hi Bean
If you take this seriously your life will change dramatically. If you don't you will be 80 and still blaming the government or somebody else.
Stop blaming others and take personal responsibility for your life.
Changing schools won't make a difference - different teachers and different students - but the same problem will repeat itself.
Trust you have the stomach to digest this one!

26.Jul.2009 01:29pm

No short-cuts to avoid academic excellence.
Some universities do offer a bridging course for students who didn't have the correct subject choices - and of course if you excel during this year your chances would be good to get accepted.

25.Jul.2009 10:36am

What is the difference between a medical degree for an undergraduate and medical school

Alex

25.Jul.2009 11:20am

To become a doctor in the USA, you need a B degree (certain prerequisites, but you may major in a wide variety of non -medical subjects). Then you can apply to attend a medical school - another 4 years of mainly medical studies and practical/clinical training.
Does it make sense?

Dr Anton

24.Jul.2009 10:43pm

Doctor,
Thank you that would be great! I live in Patterson, NY (Putnam County). I really appreciate this, I would LOVE to attend a medical camp. :)

25.Jul.2009 03:28am

Hi
In applying to medical school, the competitors for the available post dictate the level of excellence, and I don't see your friend being successful without excellent A-levels results. Alternatively go for a science honours degree and apply at that stage. Some medical schools offer bridging courses - you will have to contact a number of medical schools to get more info.

Dr Anton

24.Jul.2009 09:00pm

Dear Doc
I want to study medicine in the Uk, I currently live in the US. I was just wondering if the procedure to becoming a pediatrician is the same in the UK as it is in the US?

Josy

25.Jul.2009 03:23am

Joey
It does differ somewhat from the USA.
One can apply to medical school in the UK directly after your so called A-levels, but some Med schools prefer a honors science degree.
The training changed in 2005, and it looks like the following to me (write under correction):
Medical school - 5 years plus two Foundation years, basic specialist training as a SHO (senior house officer) 2-3 years and formal specialist registrarship I believe is another 4 years.

hi dr.anton i have two questions no.1 when u have high fevrf and cough and throat pain so what u should u no.2 when your age is 14 so what your height and weight need to be

sobia

24.Jul.2009 01:56pm

Sobia
The Apprentice Doctor Course material does have sections on the above questions.
With your symptoms you need to see a doctor for a full clinical examination.
Your weight and height will vary according to race, gender and "bone frame". The normal values also vary to some extent - do a GOOGLE search on "BMI calculator (Body Mass Index)" for a calculator that will assist you with this answer.

AHEC organizations also arrange medical camps - where do you live? - then I will put you in contact with your nearest AHEC.

Hi Polok
Yes UK schools are recognized in a great number of countries in the world - but every country do have rules and regulations regarding registering as a doctor e.g. entrance exams and other administrative protocols.
Please understand that I am a practicing and very busy - and with multiple thousand of apprentice doctors - I am simply unable to engage a personal e-mail correspondence with all - so feel free to ask as many questions as you like on this page - that way a lot of other guys learn at the same time.

22.Jul.2009 02:04pm

Please note that you always need to become a doctor first - before specializing in any direction.
If you excel in A-levels you should be able to apply straight away for admission to a number of medical schools.
If you want to do an Honors degree first - choose a science major like chemistry/biochemistry or bio-medical science.

thankx so much Dr. Anton. i'll be reading a course in med. lab. tech very soon, hoping to become a doc someday but thakx so much 4 all those advices...... pls could u tell the major causes of hepatitis(HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV) and the best way to care or treat it.....

maestro

21.Jul.2009 02:11pm

There are many causes of hepatitis including side effects of a variety of medications, alcohol abuse, and toxins, disorders of the gall bladder or pancreas, and infections. There are many infective agents that can cause, or hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). The term is unfortunately commonly used to refer to a particular group of viruses identified letters of the alphabet Hepatitis A/B/C/D virus etc.
Treatment is empirical - thus removing the cause and addressing the symptoms.

Hi David
The Apprentice Corporation is a service organization to prospective medical professionals. I am a practicing doctor and love to answer questions and encourage those who consider medicine as a career. Unfortunately I do not offer any scholarships.
By the way - you offer preciously little information about yourself and your accomplishments - and if I may add some advice - if ever you apply for a scholarship - refrain from using cell-phone style English.
All of the best!
