Can I become a doctor through being a paramedic and is this a good way in
Matt
21.May.2009 04:41pm
Matt
I would advise you rather to go straight into medicine, then specialize in Emergency medicine.
Or dedicate yourself towards the paramedic option and continue learning and improve yourself as a paramedic with training...

Failing is not an option - go with this attitude.
You want to become a surgeon? Will you tell your patient that you want to operate but rather would not because you are afraid that that the op will fail?
Failing is not an option.
Now just like an operation - if you encounter a complication - deal with it then. Of course do al in your power to avoid compactions!!
Now you CAN do it - go with self assurance - there is NO other way - believe me!

hi doc i didn't quite catch your answer last time what grades do you need to get to become a doc which works in a hostpital and what subjects would i need to take
henry
16.May.2009 05:51pm
Hi Henry
GCSE: "Triple science" and maths plus your choice of language/s and other subjects of your choice.
A levels - maths, chemistry, physical science and biology..
Due to the competitiveness of the selection process you will have to get a number of A* and A's grades
I am not always aware of the specific local choices regarding subjects available - so the above is general guidelines - hope it is of some help.

How less likely am I to get into med school if I'm taking my general education classes at a community college? The CC is regarded as having the high transfer rate, and being regarded as having the top nursing program in the state.
Lily
16.May.2009 07:02am
Hi Lilly
Med schools selection criteria revolves mainly around your MCAT results and your premedical B-degree academic results. Also of importance will be volunteer work in a hospital etc.
So studying at a CC shouldn't be a problem as long as the criteria above are in place.

Hey, i was wondering is there any way to become a doctor without having to take physics and maths at A-level? could i just take Chemistry, biology, and mabye one or two others?
joe
11.May.2009 02:11pm
Hi Joe
In my opinion, no.
Selection is simply to competitive - in other words - there are simply too many candidates with As and A*s with those subjects.
Dr Anton
10.May.2009 04:30pm
in uk.done gcses. i am now doing maths, biology, chemistry and psychology for AS.would it be better to drop chemistry next
year & get good grades, or do i do chemistry but risk getting lower grades? even if chem is accepted to AS
DipDip
11.May.2009 02:07pm
Hi DipDip
Chemistry is essential.
Organic chemistry is required to understand biochemistry - an essential subject towards understanding the basic chemical building blocks of the human body.
You not only need to take chemistry - you need to excel in chemistry!
Dr Anton

I already performed 2 years on anesth. trainment in ARgentina. I want to start over in USA, after giving the Steps. Do I have real posibilities as a latin doctor to become anesthesiologist in USA??
Fede
09.May.2009 04:44pm
Hi Fede
You will need to pass the relevant testing through the ECFMG. So if you want to be an anesthetist in the USA you will have to redo your residency/specialty training in the US.
Be perfectly sure this is the way you want to go - remember anesthetists in the USA carry a very high medico-legal risk with all the negative emotional and financial implications.

I joined St Johns Cadets not long ago, Will this help in the future if go to Med School?
Lydia
09.May.2009 04:36pm
Hi Lydia
When applying to med school, your academic results count the heaviest weight, followed by the results of your admissions test (MCAT or equivalent).
Anything else showing the selection committee that you are interested in medicine will be to your benefit - so the answer is a definite "yes"
Dr Anton

hello i reallu want to become a doctor so i want to know after high school hw many years does it take to become a doctor?
H
08.May.2009 05:43pm
Hi H
One of two routes
Route 1: You will have to do your A-levels - and aim for straight A's, then apply for med school admission - if accepted it will take 5 years (plus 2 years as a junior doctor).
Route 2: Do an honours BSc degree:(3-4 years) followed by med school - 5 years.

hello doc, i want to know if you really need to be very smart to be a doctor. does it take only people with brains or someone who is willing to study really hard?
Mavis
07.May.2009 12:14pm
Hi Mavis
The competition to enter medical school is fierce - so by default you have to be "smart" - at least somewhat above average
The reality is doing medicine is also hard work - both study-wise and time-wise.
So I suppose both attributes apply to becoming a doctor.
Dr Anton
06.May.2009 05:50pm
Hi Doctor
thank you so much for the answers :)
You have been in highschool and juniorhighschool like us , and what was your some of the ways of studying or time organization>?
like what helpd you focus on studying
Thanks : )
Stella
07.May.2009 12:26pm
HI Stella
Key 1 - planning. I always planned my hours in the beginning of the academic year.
"Cramming" just before exams never worked for me. (One may pass the exam - but the information doesn't enter the long term memory effectively)
A bit every day is the second key. ([Q]: How does one eat an elephant? [A]: One bite at a time.)
3. And study wisely - do a study course. Some students are visual learners and other learn better by hearing the information.
4. Be somewhat flexible with your study roster - go out with friends on the spur of the moment... but do catch up again.
5. Put time aside for relaxing, exercise, family and time for God - or according to what you value in life...

Lydia
07.May.2009 12:10pm

1. Study for excellent grades in all subjects
2. Take part in a hospital volunteer program
3. Consider doing one or both of the Apprentice Doctor Courses
Dr Anton
06.May.2009 03:32pm
hello doc. i'm currently studying maths, english, biology, modern studies and french. is that enough for me to become a doctor?
Mavis
06.May.2009 04:15pm
I am missing the science - physics and chemistry subjects.
Medicine is short for medical science - so the science subjects like chemistry and physical science are actually quite important.
The body is a highly complex chemical factory.
It is also a highly complex stuctural unit working within the basic laws of physics.

Hi Doctor,
I'm currently in grade 9 and graduating soon, and lives in Canada. I'm taking IB programme in grade 10,11,12.
Now, would IB be affective for Med school? I'm taking partial which universities inner country don't really care.
Stella
06.May.2009 03:15pm
Hi Stella
It seems like most Canadian universities acknowledge the IB diploma, and sure it will look good on your CV - thus increasing your chances for selection at most medical schools. Unfortunately I do not have a lot of experience regarding becoming a doctor in Canada.
